The Service
Jyut (粵語) provides tools to study Cantonese, including phrase lessons, flashcards, tone practice, a word list, optional cloud sync with an account, text-to-speech audio, and an optional AI tutor. Features may change, pause, or end as we develop the product.
Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent where you live) to create an account. If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to accept these terms for that organization.
Accounts
Accounts are optional for browsing and guest learning. If you register:
- Provide accurate information and keep credentials confidential
- You are responsible for activity under your account, except where you prove unauthorized access despite reasonable care
- We may suspend or terminate accounts that abuse the Service or violate these terms
Learning data for signed-in users may sync to cloud storage tied to your account. Guest data remains in your browser unless migrated when you sign in. You may export or delete your account data from Your account data, or email support@jyut.study.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the Service for anything unlawful, harmful, or infringing of others’ rights
- Attempt to disrupt, probe, reverse engineer, or overload the Service except as allowed by law
- Circumvent authentication, rate limits, or tutor quotas, or access non-public systems
- Abuse the AI tutor (for example spam, automated bulk requests, malicious prompts, or generating content that violates applicable law)
- Misrepresent the Service as official government, school, or exam certification
Learning content and AI
Lessons, romanization, translations, and audio are provided for personal educational use. Language is living—phrases, tones, and usage can vary by region and context. The Service is not a substitute for professional instruction, certified translation, or formal examinations.
AI tutor replies are generated automatically and may contain mistakes, omissions, or non-standard Cantonese. Do not rely on them as sole authority for exams, travel safety, medical, legal, or other high-stakes needs. You remain responsible for how you use any output.
Intellectual property
The Service—including branding, layout, software, and original lesson materials we provide—is owned by us or our licensors and protected by intellectual property laws. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for personal, non-commercial learning.
You may not scrape, republish, or commercially redistribute substantial portions of the lesson data or app without prior written permission, except for fair use or other rights that cannot be waived under applicable law.
Content you submit (for example AI chat messages) remains yours; you grant us a license to process it solely to operate the features you use and to secure and improve the Service.
Third-party services
The Service depends on third parties such as Firebase, Google Cloud / Gemini, hosting providers, and speech services. Their availability and terms affect the Service. We are not responsible for third-party outages or policy changes, though we will try to keep core learning features usable.
Privacy
How we handle personal data is described in our Privacy Policy, which is part of how we operate the Service.
Disclaimers
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.” TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. We do not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation, perfect accuracy of language content or AI output, or that defects will be corrected.
Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE AND OUR SUPPLIERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR (B) USD $50. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; in those places, our liability is limited to the maximum extent allowed.
Indemnity
You will defend and indemnify us against claims arising from your misuse of the Service, violation of these terms, or infringement of third- party rights, to the extent permitted by law.
Termination
You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or end access if you violate these terms, if we discontinue the Service, or if required by law. Provisions that by nature should survive (including ownership, disclaimers, and liability limits) will survive termination.
Changes to the terms
We may update these terms. The “Last updated” date will change when we do. Material changes may be highlighted in the app or on this page. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance, except where law requires otherwise.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where the operator of Jyut is established, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, except that mandatory consumer protections in your place of residence still apply where they cannot be waived. Courts in that jurisdiction may hear disputes, subject to such consumer rights.
